Gary O’Neil issues promising Matheus Cunha injury update ahead of Wolves vs Chelsea

Wolves are set to face Chelsea on Sunday in their first home game of the season with two players likely to return.

Gary O’Neil’s side did not get off to the best start to the new Premier League campaign last weekend. The Old Gold were defeated by Arsenal 2-0 to condemn the side to a fourth successive opening-day defeat.

However, Wolves’ fixtures do not get any easier with the club set to face high-spending Chelsea at Molineux this weekend.

The game no doubt presents a chance for Wolves to add their first points to the table, and they have now received a big boost going into the fixture.

The Wolves duo did not make it into the starting XI against Arsenal last weekend with Matheus Cunha being restricted to a cameo off the bench.

In pre-season, Cunha had picked up a minor injury that kept him out of Wolves’ remaining friendlies.

On top of this, Boubacar Traore also missed the majority of Wolves’ pre-season campaign as he was away on international duty competing in the Paris Olympic Games for Mali.

However, after another week of training, O’Neil believes that the duo will be in contention for the Chelsea tie.

He said: “We are fine, no issues at all. Matheus Cunha is fine so he will be available for more minutes. Boubacar Traore has done an extra week of training so he is in a better spot.

“Everybody else is ok so we are as we were.”

Wolves need Matheus Cunha back to his best

Last season, Cunha terrified the Chelsea defence. The attacker netted a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge in an unbelievable 4-2 victory.

If Wolves stand any chance of winning on Sunday, they need Cunha to return to this form.

Chelsea will no doubt be a tough team to beat after their numerous signings, including Pedro Neto

If Wolves’ performance in the second half against Arsenal can be replicated, the Old Gold will certainly come away with a good result.
