Gary O’Neil issues injury update on three key Wolves players ahead of Newcastle United clash

Wolves clash with Newcastle United on Sunday and Gary O’Neil has supplied an injury update on three of his key players.

Wolves will be looking to get their season well and truly underway this weekend as they come up against Newcastle United at Molineux.

It’s been a difficult start for Gary O’Neil’s men following defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea before picking up a point on the road at Nottingham Forest.

Ian Wright and Roy Keane both agree that Wolves will secure a draw against Newcastle while Paul Merson is less optimistic, predicting a 2-1 win for the Magpies.

That negativity from Merson is perhaps justified as O’Neil supplies an injury update on three of his integral players.

Wolves were plagued by injuries in the last campaign but in their first three matches of this term have gone relatively unscathed.

However, during the international break, a few issues have cropped up. Mario Lemina withdrew from the Gabon squad through injury and Rayan Ait-Nouri also didn’t feature for Algeria with a similar problem.

It then also emerged that despite scoring against Argentina in a famous win for Colombia, Yerson Mosquera was taken off with a suspected injury minutes from time.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle, as per Liam Keen on X, O’Neil said that everyone was in a decent spot but Ait-Nouri and Lemina haven’t trained and will require ‘late checks’.

Mosquera, on the other hand, had cramp in both legs and didn’t train fully on Friday, but the Wolves boss believes there is no injury.

“Everyone is OK and in a decent spot. Mario and Rayan haven’t trained much and there will be late checks on them. Yerson had cramp in both calves and didn’t train fully today, but there’s no injury,” O’Neil said.

A huge period coming up for Wolves

Regardless of whether Ait-Nouri and Lemina are deemed fit enough to play this weekend, a huge period awaits O’Neil and his players, who could find themselves flirting with the relegation spots if they aren’t careful.

In three of their next five matches, Wolves play against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City; teams expected to fight for either the Champions League or tussle for the Premier League title.

O’Neil’s men did secure a 2-1 win over Man City last term and were unfortunate in both games not to take at least a point against Liverpool.

That said, they are two very difficult games and they make the visit of Newcastle and the trip to Brentford all the more important in securing points on the board.
