Gary O’Neil delivers damning verdict on Wolves’ performance against Brentford

Gary O’Neil has delivered his verdict on Wolves’ performance after they were outplayed by Brentford in a 5-3 defeat.

While O’Neil did not view the Brentford match as a ‘must-win’, for many of the fans it was seen as an ideal opportunity to end their awful form.

Wolves sat bottom of the Premier League going into the match with just one point from the first six. With Man City and Brighton on the horizon, a reaction was needed from the Old Gold.

However, instead what was on show was more shambolic defending resulting in four goals alone being conceded in the first half.

As a result, Wolves are now on course to break an unwanted Premier League record, with relegation looking more likely by the day.

After the match, O’Neil addressed the media where he gave a damning assessment of the performance.

In short, the Brentford defeat was one of the worst performances in recent Wolves history.

Every time the Bees went forward, it looked like they would score as the backline had no control.

While Mario Lemina’s performance against Brentford drew criticism from fans, overall, few players came away with their heads held high.

O’Neil was also highly displeased with the performance, calling the goals Wolves conceded ‘crazy’ as the wait for a victory goes on.

He said: “It’s the furthest I’ve seen the group from what we wanted. An unbelievably disappointing afternoon. Crazy goals we gave away. We were wide open! There’s a lot to think about & a lot to put right.

“It’s the worst game I’ve been involved in as a coach.”

At present, the performance of Wolves’ backline is nothing short of a disgrace. How the club have managed to concede so many goals from simple mistakes is baffling.

Long gone were the days only a few seasons ago when the Old Gold could see out 1-0 victories with a rock-solid defence.

With the players available to O’Neil, the backline should be doing far better and the Wolves manager needs to find a solution quickly.

If the issue is not fixed by the end of the international break, Man City could end up embarrassing the Old Gold at Molineux in two weeks.
