Gary O’Neil can now create unwanted club history in Wolves clash vs Man City

Wolves disastrous start to the season could be about to get worse as Manchester City travel to Molineux on Sunday looking to inflict further damage.

The Citizens have gone unbeaten in each of their opening seven Premier League games, with Erling Haaland scoring an eye-watering 10 goals so far.

Contrastingly, Wolves are winless in the top flight, taking just one point from the opening two months of the season and conceding a whopping 21 goals.

It’s going to be incredibly tough to pick up a result at Molineux, and while Kevin Nolan is tipping a shock victory for Wolves against Manchester City, failure to do so could see them create history for all the wrong reasons.

Wolves can set unwanted club history vs Man City

In their previous home match, Wolves equalled their joint worst start to a season in the club’s history against Liverpool, tasting a 2-1 loss.

The only other occasions they’d totalled one point from their first six games were in 1926/27 in the second tier, 1964/65 top flight and 2002/03 Premier League.

Remarkably, losing on Sunday would mean Gary O’Neil’s men haven’t tasted victory in their first eight games, only doing so on one other occasion – 2004/05.

Perhaps more alarmingly, recording another defeat on home turf this weekend would make it their worst start at Molineux in the club’s history, as per BBC Sport.

O’Neil will want to avoid becoming the manager to create that unwanted history, but considering their results so far this term and the form of Man City, it would be a shock to see them coming away with a positive result.

Wolves team news vs Man City

Heading into this match, O’Neil has most of his first-team squad to choose from, with not many injury concerns to deal with.

Yerson Mosquera remains sidelined with a long-term injury, keeping him out for the rest of the season, while Boubacar Traore is still out till December.

The biggest news to come from O’Neil’s press conference was Hwang Hee-chan being sidelined for the next couple of weeks, with it first thought that the 28-year-old could be out for between 8 – 10 weeks.

Hwang scored in last year’s 2-1 win over Man City, and although he hasn’t started this season well, Wolves would have liked him as an option to choose from.

Hopefully, another Wanderers star can make themselves a hero on Sunday, with Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen the likely candidates.
