Gary O’Neil blown away by Wolves star after his ‘incredible’ performance in Fulham win

Wolves clinched a shock 4-1 victory over Fulham to climb out of the relegation zone on Saturday and Gary O’Neil sang the praises of one player.

A trip to Fulham was billed as a difficult test for Wolves, especially with Pablo Sarabia, Craig Dawson and Santiago Bueno all absent from the squad.

The Cottagers started the day seventh in the Premier League table while Wolves were in 19th however, it was the visitors who performed like the positions were switched around.

After Alex Iwobi opened the scoring, supporters would have feared the worst but Matheus Cunha ensured they didn’t have anything to worry about.

Cunha was in red-hot form against Fulham, inspiring an incredible comeback, producing a Bergkamp-esque lob over Bernd Leno before teeing up Joao Gomes and then scoring another screamer.

Cunha dominated Fulham in their backyard and now Gary O’Neil has offered his verdict on the Brazilian.

Gary O’Neil on ‘incredible’ Matheus Cunha

It was the second time in as many games that the 25-year-old performed a rescue act to deliver them three points.

In the win over Southampton, he scored a wonder goal and assisted Sarabia while his latest performance saw him score a brace and assist once.

One Wolves fan compared him to the great Dennis Bergkamp while Sky Sports reporter Johnny Phillips praised Cunha’s excellent display.

Phillips was one of many to wax lyrical over his performance, including O’Neil, who delivered an ‘incredible’ verdict on the forward after the match.

Praising his starring role in the comeback, O’Neil said via Express & Star: “His numbers, his understanding, his willingness to be in and amongst the team out of possession and do the other side of the game has come on so much.

“I love working with him because the penny’s definitely dropped that he can be a top, top player.

“There were gaps before but he works every single day to be as good as he can be now and I love working with him.

“His talent is incredible, obviously, but if you watch the top players, they’re able to do it week in week out.

“The numbers he is producing at the moment is up there with anybody. He is important to the team.

“The team can be as well organised and as well coached as you like but they won’t win games without quality. Matheus is a big part of our comeback.”

Wolves have to prepare for Cunha interest in January

Cunha is capable of getting in every single team in the top-flight and that speaks volumes of his talent.

Wolves would be in big trouble if the Brazilian were to suffer an injury or leave the club in January, with bigger Premier League clubs showing an interest in Cunha.

Over the years, the Old Gold have become used to selling their best players but they must keep someone as influential as the former Atletico Madrid man at all costs.

The incredible forward has now registered 10 goal involvements in just 12 games, putting him ahead of big names such as Ollie Watkins and Luis Diaz for his impact this term.

Realistically, Wolves’ chances of staying in the Premier League hinge on Cunha playing and the fans will be praying he’s here for a while longer yet.
