Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy all agree over controversial decision in Bournemouth vs Wolves

Wolves recorded a huge win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, but there was one big incident in the game that people are talking about.

Wolves went five points clear of the relegation zone with the win – and Matheus Cunha was again the hero.

Cunha popped up with his 13th Premier League goal of the season in the first-half, digging the ball from out under his feet into the top corner after ghosting into the area.

It was a top performance from Cunha, who has now scored in each of his last four games.

But there was a big talking point, after Illia Zabarnyi was sent off for Bournemouth.

He was initially booked for his challenge on Rayan Ait-Nouri but it was then upgraded to a red card after referee Michael Salisbury went to the pitchside monitor.

The Premier League explained why Zabarnyi was sent off, saying it was ultimately ‘serious foul play’.

Last night, the incident was discussed on Match of the Day.

Zabarnyi received his marching orders in the 31st minute of the game, and that helped Wolves get a foothold.

Just moments later, Matheus Cunha scored, and then Wolves battled hard to get the win.

Having a one-man advantage for most of the game was a big help, but some felt the decision to send off Zabarnyi was harsh.

Those in the Match of the Day studio last night certainly felt that way.

Gary Lineker said: “Huge win for Wolves, the red card was influential though. We feel it might be another unnecessary intervention.

Danny Murphy added: “We’ve seen these before. I think it’s just having an understanding of the game and when someone’s going to try and do someone, and when someone’s accidentally caught someone.

“He goes for a genuine attempt at the ball. What you see here is he gets the ball but his foot rebounds off the top of the ball and then catches Ait-Nouri’s leg higher than it should. There’s absolutely nothing but eyes fixated on the ball.”

Lineker said: “There’s no real force or anything.”

Alan Shearer said: “There was a reason why he caught him high, and the reason was because he actually wins the ball and the ball takes him higher than his tackle originally was.”

Lineker added: “We think that’s a mistake.”

Vitor Pereira deserves major credit for Wolves’ win over Bournemouth

The Zabarnyi sending off could have gone either way, but you can see why it was given.

He may have played the ball initially, but ultimately he endangered the opponent with his challenge and serious foul play explanation is understandable.

That decision made life easier for Wolves, but Vitor Pereira still deserves a lot of credit for this result.

The Match of the Day pundits also highlight how good Wolves actually were even before the red card, with the performance full of energy and intent.

The wing-backs were great and Cunha showed the quality he does in most games he plays.

Pereira also substituted Joao Gomes at half-time, showing that he learned his lesson from the Arsenal game after Gomes got sent off after the manager left him on.

Pereira recently insisted that Wolves would stay up this season – and fans are certainly starting to believe that now.
