Four things we learned after Wolves hung on to beat Sheffield United

Four things we learned after Wolves edged Sheffield United at Molineux to secure a 1-0 win.

In a nervy display, Wolves secured a vital three points thanks to Pablo Sarabia’s header. It wasn’t the greatest display from the hosts who struggled, especially in the second half to control the game.

However, Sarabia’s header from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross managed to be the difference as Gary O’Neil’s side moved up to eighth in the Premier League.

The victory could well go on to be vital for Wolves with there being a wide expectation that eighth place may be enough to secure European football.

Now, after the dust has settled, we look at four things we learned from the display after Wolves returned to winnings ways at Molineux

Many fans went into the game nervous about the tie. Despite Sheffield United sitting rock-bottom, the club have struggled against the poorer sides since returning to the Premier League.

This has been evident throughout this season with the club losing to the Blades in the reverse fixture as well as dropping points to Nottingham Forest and Luton.

At Molineux, Wolves struggled to take control of the game, especially in the second half with Sheffield United coming close on multiple occasions.

If O’Neil’s side wants to continue to improve, they must be ruthless against these sides.

The Spaniard has been subject to much praise throughout the week and he showed the world why on Sunday.

Despite standing at 5’9”, the attacker netted from a brilliant header to secure the three points for the hosts.

Sarabia almost secured Wolves’ second as well with multiple efforts going close. The attacker proved to be one of their biggest attacking threats throughout despite the poor performance.

Now, after working his way into the starting XI, the winger is now proving why he could be a vital player for Wolves come the end of the season.

Much of Wolves’ success this season has come down to their home form. The side went on an incredible unbeaten run which oversaw some memorable victories.

However, two defeats to Man United and Brentford soon ended this despite the side playing well away from home.

A victory against Sheffield United was important for many reasons but certainly to end their winless run at Molineux.

With O’Neil now going into Wolves’ most important game of the season on Wednesday against Brighton in the FA Cup, the squad should be able to take some more confidence.

Wolves are firmly in the European race

Fans have long dreamed about returning to Europe. Throughout the season, the European question has been seen as more of a hope than possible. However, Wolves have now firmly thrown their hat in the mix.

Moving up to eighth in the Premier League, the club are one point off Brighton in seventh and six behind Man United in sixth. With VAR costing Wolves a number of points already this campaign, many would argue that O’Neil’s side should already be there.

With an away trip to Newcastle coming on the weekend, a victory would really send a statement, especially against a fellow European-hopeful side.
