Matheus Cunha went from hero to zero in Wolves’ FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth but, he wasn’t the only one who had a hot and cold afternoon.
Wolves lost on penalties to Bournemouth in a match that was heavily influenced by Cunha.
It was expected that the Brazilian would earn the headlines having scored in five of his previous six matches but, at the Vitality, he was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
After scoring a marvellous goal to force the FA Cup tie to extra time, Cunha was sent off for lashing out at Milos Kerkez multiple times, making himself the villain of the contest.

Toti Gomes had a ‘weird’ game against Bournemouth
While Cunha missing the next three Wolves games due to suspension is the talk of the fixture, the Brazil international wasn’t the only player to have a game that split opinion.
Toti Gomes had a game of two sides at the Vitality, being both dragged around by Bournemouth’s tricky forwards and keeping Wolves in the game.
Speaking about the Portuguese defender’s performance, Liam Keen described the centre-back as having a ‘weird’ game due to his highs and lows, via Express and Star.
“Toti is a weird one today because he had a torrid time against Semenyo for probably 75, 80% of it and then has an unbelievable moment to keep Wolves in the game.”
While the likes of Antoine Semenyo did keep Toti on his toes, the 26-year-old put in a remarkable shift in the back three, something that has become the norm since Vitor Pereira’s arrival.
It was yet another positive showing for the Portugal international, who is really relishing working with Pereira, putting on what could be considered a man-of-the-match display.
Toti Gomes was a positive amid Matheus Cunha’s negatives
What’s most frustrating about the fixture is that it was so nearly an entirely different scenario for Wolves.
Playing 120 minutes wasn’t ideal but, the Old Gold showed great spirit to keep the score level, with the progress crashing down as Cunha failed to control himself at a vital moment.
Wolves’ top-three performers vs Bournemouth |
8.5 – Toti Gomes |
8.5 – Sam Johnstone |
7.6 – Matheus Cunha |
Cunha admitted that he lost his head when squaring up to Kerkez, which will see the Brazilian out of action for the remainder of the month.
A high point was the performance of Toti and other players who stood up at a time of need but sadly, the primary takeaway of the game was Cunha’s inability to remain in control.
