Arsenal vs Wolves round-up: Unwanted record set as Gary O’Neil sends clear message to Fosun

Wolves were unable to resist Arsenal on Saturday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in their opening Premier League match of the season.

In a poor first half, Kai Havertz was able to head in an opener after Jose Sa unwisely rushed off his line.

The visitors improved in the second period but were unable to find an equaliser before Bukayo Saka netted Arsenal’s second.

In this article, Molineux News has rounded up all the latest news regarding the result.

Wolves break unwanted record against Arsenal

While a defeat was widely expected, the result will not please Gary O’Neil and the squad.

Wolves showed that they were more than capable of picking up a point in the second half but couldn’t find that killer instinct when they were on top.

As a result, the Old Gold’s opening-day troubles continued. Since their promotion to the Premier League, Wolves have only won their first game once, back in the 2020/21 campaign when they beat Sheffield United 2-0

Since then, they have lost the last four opening-day games, with Arsenal being the latest side to inflict the defeat.

Now, this has unfortunately set a new record at the club after their consecutive defeats at the start of each season.

There were many players who impressed at the Emirates despite the result.

New signing Rodrigo Gomes was full of energy on the wing, while Jorgen Strand Larsen was unlucky not to net an equaliser.

However, it was the centre-back duo of Yerson Mosquera and Toti Gomes who earned the manager’s praise at full-time.

Wolves once again tested out a back-four system and competed well against Arsenal. Mosquera in particular looked sensational as he made some tidy challenges throughout.

After the match, O’Neil was delighted with how the duo performed. He said: “Pleased with Mosquera, was delighted with him and Toti as a partnership. In terms of carrying out the plan, I thought it was really positive.”

With deadline day closing, many Wolves fans are hoping to see more signings enter the club this month.

So far only three new faces have moved to Molineux with Tommy Doyle also earning a permanent deal

This is despite Wolves netting over £90 million this summer in player sales after the departures of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman

However, in the aftermath of the Arsenal defeat, O’Neil insisted that Wolves must make more signings this month or the club will be at risk of ‘standing still’.

He said: “No real update on names linked, it’s a ruthless league and we have an opportunity to be really clever and get some stuff done, the next 2 weeks is big for us…you take £100m last summer, you take £100m this summer, you can’t stand still.”
