Wolves could target a very specific kind of player in January as Rob Edwards drops new hint

Wolves’ January is certainly going to be fascinating.

Currently, Wanderers are 13 points adrift of safety and undoubtedly, the situation is looking very bleak.

No club has ever gone on to stay in the Premier League from this position, and for a lot of Wolves fans now, relegation to the Championship is inevitable.

But we’ll see what December brings, and if Wolves can somehow reduce that gap to safety.

And if they do manage to do that, then it could have a big bearing on Wolves’ approach to the January window.

Ahead of the game with Manchester United, Edwards spoke about the upcoming window – and suggested that there is a specific kind of player Wolves may go after.

The 2025/26 season has a bit of extra importance to it for a lot of players because of course, next year, it’s the World Cup.

The hype is already starting to build for the tournament after the draw was conducted last Friday, and lots of players are hoping to go to North America next year.

But what is vital, is that these players are playing regularly.

And Edwards has suggested Wolves could play on that, and seek to offer game time to players on the fringes at their club who are wanting to go to the World Cup.

He said (via E&S): “That’s been spoken about as well.

“There’ll be a lot of clubs that will be thinking the same thing as well, so we’ll be competing against a few for those sorts of players, but that was spoken about.

“Any which way possible that we might be able to improve the group and improve the squad, then we’ll be looking at it.”

It is expected that Wolves will target a new midfielder and a creative forward in the next window.

A new goalkeeper has also been mentioned, with Wolves reportedly keen on James Trafford.

Wolves will still face transfer hardship in January

This is an interesting idea in theory, because undoubtedly many players want to be playing as regularly as possible in the lead up to the World Cup.

But of course, Wolves’ league position, and the fact they’re 13 points from safety, is surely going to be prohibitive for some players.

As much as some players would feel confident they’d play regularly for Wolves, there is also a high chance of relegation. Some will not want that on their CVs.

Some may wish to come but only if a relegation clause is inserted.

But if Wolves start signing people by agreeing to relegation clauses, one wonders whether the club would be signing the right kind of player. Said players would likely not be thinking about the long term.
